Torrevieja (Valencian: Torrevella, meaning the old tower) is a seaside resort located on the Mediterranean Sea, 41 km south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca in Spain. The municipality is 71 km2 in size, has approximately 20 km of coastline and has more than 104,486 inhabitants. Tourism is the main source of income, because in summer the total population can reach 200,000 people. In the past, however, salt extraction from salt lakes, the Salinas, was the main activity. Salt extraction is still of considerable size.

The name of the city has a meaning, namely: 'Old Tower'. This name did not come out of the blue but is taken from the tower which can still be found proudly on the north side of the city. This old tower is part of the history that you can still feel and see. At the same time, the place has grown into a fully-fledged international city in recent decades.
The old city center consists of a maze of streets filled with shops. An environment that you can enjoy walking through. There is a large shopping center on the edge of the city. This shopping center is surrounded by a large 'leisure zone'. Here you will find cinemas, bowling alleys, a casino and numerous restaurants. The city itself is largely located on the coast, which is interspersed with idyllic bays and beautiful sandy beaches. The long boulevard is completely car-free and offers a wide selection of facilities. Torrevieja currently has three ports. One fishing port and two marinas. The area around the marinas is surrounded by many shops, restaurants and cozy terraces located directly on the water. Fresh fish is brought ashore every morning in the fishing port and you can buy it there.
