Surrounding the city is a broad plain bounded to the north and northwest by the eastern foothills of the Cordilleras Béticas, consisting of the pre-coastal mountain range (Carrascoy, El Puerto, Los Villares, Columbares and Escalona), and bounded to the south and southwest by the plains and mountain ranges of the coastline (El Algarrobo, Sierra de la Muela, Pelayo, Gorda, Sierra de la Fausilla and la Sierra minera de Cartagena-La Unión, with the extreme protrusion into the Mediterranean Sea, Cabo de Palos).
The Campo de Cartagena is formed by the municipalities of Cartagena, La Unión, Fuente Alamo de Murcia, Los Alcázares, Torre Pacheco, San Javier , San Pedro del Pinatar and part of the municipality of Murcia.
In this plain of the Campo de Cartagena we find volcanic remains, including the Cabezo Negro de Tallante, El Carmolí, el Cabezo Beaza and the islands in the Mar Menor .
Licor 43 (also called Cuarenta Y Tres or Licor Cuarenta Y Tres) is a sweet Spanish liqueur with a clear vanilla flavor. It has been made by Diego Zamorra SA in Cartagena since 1924. This is said to be done according to a recipe from the 18th century. Exports take place to more than 60 countries, making Licor 43 one of the best-known Spanish liqueurs. A visit and tasting to the factory is highly recommended.
