Águilas is a municipality in the Spanish province of Murcia ( Costa Calida ) in the Murcia region with an area of 252 km2. Águilas has approximately 35,000 inhabitants.

Águilas is located at the southernmost tip of the Costa Cálida. It is a former Roman fishing port. Off the coast lies the island of Isla del Fraile, where traces and ruins from this Roman past can still be found. In 1579 on a high rock between Poniente and Levante beaches, the San Juan de las Águilas fortress was built to defend the city against invaders. This castle was rebuilt in the 18th century.
Águilas flourished in the 19th century as a commercial center where a British colony exploited silver, lead and iron. Many remains from these mining days remain visible, including the railway line and the characteristic pier of El Hornillo, where large seagoing vessels could moor.
An old locomotive stands in the center, commemorating this important time in the city's history. In addition to its monumental and archaeological wealth, Águilas has much more to offer. Nowadays it is a bustling, typical Spanish fishing town with a beautiful walking promenade and many bars and restaurants. Spread over the 28 kilometer long coastline, Águilas has 35 beautiful, sometimes inhospitable sandy beaches, which gently slope into the sea and where you can still imagine yourself on a deserted island.

Every Saturday the locals buy fresh regional products at the busy market, which meanders through the narrow streets of the town. At the end of the day, people gather on the beautiful palm-tree square Plaza de España, where the pigeons create a pleasant scene.
A varied open-air program is organized here throughout the summer season with many traditional dance, song and theater performances for all ages. At the harbor there is a summer evening market and a fair every day. For the older youth there are open-air discos just outside the city. Outside the summer season, Águilas is 'the place to be' during Carnival. There is a celebration for five days. Every evening a colorful procession with floats and music passes by the stands in the main street, each dance group even more beautifully dressed than the other. You can eat and drink everywhere on the street. You must have tasted the special carnival drink “cuevas” at least once.
