However, there is often a big difference when the blossom is in bloom on the coast and inland. Due to the warm weather on the coast, the blossom will always be visible there earlier.

Spain is 3rd in the world ranking as an almond producer

Many almond trees (almendros) can be seen throughout Spain. Almonds are actually the seeds of the almond tree, also known as “drupes”. Did you know that the more blossom the almond trees have, the bigger the harvest will be? At the end of August and in September the almonds are ripe and they are beaten from the tree with the help of sticks. Every year the Spaniards harvest more than 60 million kilos of almonds. Spain is number 3 on the list of largest almond producer in the world, just behind the United States and Australia.

Name Costa Blanca

There are several stories about the name Costa Blanca, where the name comes from. The name Costa Blanca is said to have been coined in 1957 by the airline BEA (British European Airways). They started with scheduled flights between London and Valencia. The passengers could see the many white beaches from the air, and it was a good commercial slogan at the same time.

However, this is NOT where the name comes from, just like the beaches are not white but gold/yellow. Also, the name does not come from all the white houses that are here. The Costa Blanca owes its name to the many white and light pink almond blossoms that turned large parts of the region white in February.
