2017 was the hottest year ever in Spain

According to the Spanish weather institute Aemet, 2017 was the hottest year ever in Spain. In addition, 2017 was also the second driest year since 1965.

In 2017, the highest average temperature ever was measured. The average annual temperature was 16.2 degrees Celsius. That is 1.1 degree more than the annual average in the period 1981 - 2010.

Some new all time records were also measured last year. Especially due to two extremely hot days in July. At the airport in Granada on July 12 the temperature was measured of 45.7 degrees. That was 2.7 degrees higher than the previous record. The night temperatures in the past summer also broke records. At the beginning of August, the mercury at night did not fall below 26 degrees in Madrid, 27 degrees in Alicante and 28.9 degrees in the Balearic Islands. Previous nightly maximums were all before 1971.

More than 40 weather stations in Spain have separately measured records in 2017. According to Aemet, 2017 was the second driest year since 1965 with an average rainfall of 474 mm. That is 27% less than the annual average between 1981 and 2010. Only in 2005 it was drier with 468 mm average. In areas between Palencia and Valladolid, West Extremadura and parts of the Canary Islands, rainfall did not even reach half of the normal quantities.
